B. B. King

B. B. King

 Riley B. King más conocido como B. B. King (Blues Boy King - Nombre tomado de un programa radial de Sonny Boy Williamson II) nacido el 16 de septiembre de 1925 en Ittabena, Mississippi y fallecido el 14 de mayo de 2015 en Las Vegas, era un famoso guitarrista de blues y compositor. Es conocido por llamar a sus guitarras «Lucille», incluso compuso una canción con ese título haciendo referencia a la manera que su guitarra lo hace cambiar su vida, esta es ya una tradición que inició en los años cincuenta.

En el invierno de 1949, King tocaba en una sala de baile en Twist (Arkansas). Para aclimatar el salón se encendió un barril medio lleno de queroseno, una práctica habitual en la época. Durante la actuación, dos hombres comenzaron a pelearse, volcando el barril y extendiendo el combustible por el suelo, lo que obligó a evacuar el local. Una vez en el exterior B. B. King se percató de que había dejado su guitarra dentro y volvió para recuperarla. Dos personas perecieron en el incendio. Al día siguiente, B. B. King descubrió que los dos hombres que se peleaban lo hacían por una mujer llamada Lucille y llamó Lucille a aquella guitarra y a todas las que ha poseído después «para que me recuerden que no haga algo así otra vez».

 B. B. King es considerado como uno de los mayores virtuosos del blues que ha tenido la historia de la música.

 Como curiosidad, King era un defensor de la educación de la música en los niños. En 2002, fue contratado como partidario oficial de Little Kids Rock, una organización sin fines de lucro que provee a los niños de escuelas públicas de todo Estados Unidos lecciones e instrumentos musicales de manera gratuita. Forma parte de la tabla de organizaciones de los directores como miembro honorario.
