Curtis creció en un barrio conocido como South Jamaica, localizado en Queens, New York. Bajo la pobreza, su madre fue asesinada en su casa debido a problemas de drogas, por lo que el rapero tuvo que ser cuidado por sus abuelos. El joven pronto se convirtió en un gángster y era conocido en su barrio con el sobrenombre de «el joven césar» y como un chico peligroso por llevar armas y mucho dinero en efectivo al instituto, del cual le echaron en innumerables ocasiones. Esta reputación ayudó a 50 Cent a ser muy reconocido en Nueva York antes de grabar un disco con un sello discográfico mayor.
